Cambodia, China Discuss Cooperation Enhancement

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn and visiting Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Wang Yi have discussed the strengthening and broadening of cooperation in the bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

The discussion took place in Phnom Penh on Aug. 3, 2022, on the sidelines of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings hosted by Cambodia.

According to H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in the meeting, Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn and State Councillor Wang Yi noted with great satisfaction the growing relations and fruitful cooperation in various fields between Cambodia and China.

The two Foreign Ministers appreciated the outcomes of the 6th Inter-Governmental Coordination Committee Meeting on July 14, 2022 and committed to work together to carry out the Action Plan of Jointly Building a Community of Shared Future.

The Deputy PM thanked China for constantly supporting Cambodia in pursuing its own development path and providing huge assistance for the country's socio-economic development. He appreciated China’s initiative in organising a series of events to commemorate the 100th Birthday Anniversary of the late King-Father NORODOM SIHANOUK.

The two Foreign Ministers also discussed the activities to commemorate in next year the 65th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn and State Councillor Wang Yi discussed the recent developments in the Taiwan Strait, during which the Deputy PM expressed his concerns and underlined the Royal Government of Cambodia’s consistent and firm position to adhere to the “One China Policy” and consider the issues related to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang the internal affairs and under the sovereign rights of the People’s Republic of China.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn and State Councilor Wang Yi also exchanged views and assessments on the crisis in Myanmar. The Deputy PM underlined Cambodia’s disappointment with the execution of the opposition activists by the SAC that has affected Cambodia’s efforts to help the return of Myanmar to normalcy. State Councillor Wang Yi highly appreciated and underlined China’s firm support for Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen’s and of Deputy PM’s endeavors in this purpose.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn and State Councillor Wang Yi also had an exchange of views and discussion on other regional and international issues of common concerns. The two Foreign Ministers shared determination to continue to coordinate and support each other in the regional and international forums and work closely to address the challenges and promote peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and beyond.
