Phnom Penh:Cambodia and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in environmental protection, waste management, and climate change response. This commitment follows high-level discussions between Cambodian Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth and German Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Ms. Silke Röfer.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the meeting took place in Phnom Penh, where Ambassador Röfer praised Cambodia's progress in implementing a plastic reduction campaign. The initiative has reportedly evolved into a nationwide social movement, promoting environmental protection as a daily habit among citizens.
The Cambodian Ministry of Environment has developed a strategic plan targeting waste management at landfills, and highlighted the promotion of investment in Waste-to-Energy technologies to reduce waste levels. In addressing broader environmental challenges, Minister Sophalleth discussed the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon and climate change, emphasizing the ministry's readiness and emergency response plans. These plans include ensuring clean water supplies for communities in protected areas, maintaining water sources for wildlife, and preventing wildfires caused by global warming.
Minister Sophalleth also stressed the significance of instilling environmental awareness among youth and children through educational initiatives. By encouraging hygiene, nature appreciation, and participation in tree-planting activities, the ministry aims to foster a culture of environmental stewardship from a young age.
Both parties expressed optimism that continued cooperation between Cambodia and international partners will inject fresh momentum into advancing the national carbon neutrality policy, paving the way for a clean, green, and sustainable future for Cambodia.
