Phnom penh: A palpable sense of relief and optimism is sweeping through border communities in Cambodia following the signing of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Declaration in Kuala Lumpur last weekend. Residents of Prey Chan and Chouk Chey villages in O’Beichoan commune, O’ Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, have voiced strong hopes that calm and normalcy will swiftly return to their lives following periods of tension along the sensitive boundary.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, as of Oct. 30, the situation in both villages appeared peaceful. The historic document, signed by the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand on Oct. 26, 2025, is widely regarded as a significant breakthrough, opening a new chapter toward peaceful resolution and strengthened bilateral cooperation.
‘I live near the border and used to be very worried about rising tensions,’ said Chhoeun Saroeun, 55, a Prey Chan villager. ‘When I heard that our leaders signed a peace deal, I felt deeply relieved. I strongly hope we can soon return to our normal lives and travel safely again.’
The prospect of long-lasting peace is also fueling optimism for economic improvement and better livelihoods. Ny Sokun, a small vendor in Chouk Chey village, emphasised the urgent need for stability. ‘We need peace and stability to earn a living and care for our families. Now that both governments have joined hands, I truly believe the situation will soon improve,’ she stated.
Beyond their immediate hopes, residents expressed firm confidence in the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining peace and resolving border issues through dialogue and diplomatic channels. Many praised the government’s patient approach and adherence to international law, acknowledging the crucial role of Cambodian border defence forces in ensuring their constant safety and protection.
‘I’ve lived here for decades, through war and tension. But I believe in our government’s leadership, which always strives to maintain peace for the people,’ added Nget Pich, a longtime Chouk Chey resident. ‘This agreement proves the government never abandons those living along the border.’
Villagers in both communities are now closely monitoring the implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration, eagerly anticipating the realisation of the pledge by both nations’ leaders to transform the Cambodia-Thailand border into a genuine ‘frontier of peace, cooperation, and development.’ The situation in the two villages has remained calm, with no disturbances reported since the signing ceremony on Oct. 26, 2025, which was notably witnessed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the President of the United States.
