Phnom Penh: Over 93.6 percent are satisfied with the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC)’s actions in resolving the Cambodian-Thailand border area disputes.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this is a result of an opinion survey on the Cambodia-Thailand border area disputes conducted by the Asia Vision Institute (AVI) on June 17, 2025. AVI collected primary data via online communications means and interviews with a total of 1,588 participants, including young, middle-aged, and older individuals from diverse backgrounds such as domestic and foreign workers, private sector employees, government officials, students, businesspersons, and other groups.
Other key results of the opinion survey showed that 99.8 percent of Cambodians completely support the RGC in resolving border disputes in areas like Mom Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple through the International Court of Justice (ICJ) mechanism. Among these, 29.3 percent value bilateral negotiations as long as they are connected with the ICJ mechanism, while a small percentage, approximately 1.1 percent, believe in using existing bilateral mechanisms. Almost none of the participants, approximately 0.2 percent, support war.
The survey also indicated that 88.7 percent of Cambodians are satisfied with the RGC’s response to the unilateral border closure by the Thai military. Moreover, 88.6 percent support the consumption of local products. Additionally, 73.8 percent believe the border disputes were provoked by the Thai military, while 23.1 percent attribute the provocations to extremist Thai nationalists, with the general belief that the Thai government has little power in governing its state.
Regarding measures to maintain a full alert status among the armed forces, 95.8 percent support the national defense efforts of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) in preparing to defend against potential invasions from the Thai military.
In a press release, AVI concluded that the RGC exhibits independence, sovereignty, ownership, and mature political experience, with a comprehensive strategy for resolving the disputes. The Cambodian people generally support and cooperate with the RGC, receiving clear and accurate information from leaders. Cambodia opts for a peaceful solution based on international law, particularly through the ICJ’s mechanism, to maintain peace and cooperation with neighboring countries for the benefit of both Cambodian and Thai peoples.
