Timor-Leste Set to Achieve Full ASEAN Membership by 2025: Acknowledges Support from ASEAN Leaders

Kuala Lumpur: Timor-Leste is poised to become a full member of ASEAN at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit, slated for October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur. This announcement was made by Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 46th ASEAN Summit, which took place on May 26 in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this development is being hailed as a landmark achievement for both Timor-Leste and the ASEAN community. The Malaysian Premier emphasized the significance of this event, describing it as a testament to ASEAN’s unified vision for a cohesive and progressive regional alliance.

H.E. Jos© Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste, conveyed his gratitude to ASEAN leaders and officials via his social media platform, acknowledging their pivotal roles in reaching this milestone. He specifically thanked those who have contributed, both in the past and present, to Timor-Leste’s successful path towards ASEAN membership.

On the same day, during an informal meeting in Kuala Lumpur, a Timor-Leste parliamentary delegation met with a Cambodian parliamentary group led by H.E. Dr. Cheam Yeap, First Vice President of the National Assembly. The Timor-Leste representatives expressed their appreciation for the support they have received, particularly highlighting the contributions of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen. The former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate of Cambodia has been a steadfast supporter of Timor-Leste’s bid for ASEAN membership.
