AKP Phnom Penh, Fifty-six (56) journalists from 31 media organisations, journalist associations gathered here this morning in the 17th Editors’ Forum to discuss news coverage in the context of COVID-19-pandemic.
The annual forum, organised by the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ) with high preventive measures against the pandemic, adopted a 15-point joint statement, calling on all media practitioners, media organisations, state institutions, journalist associations, and private sector to be ready for such crisis in the future.
This forum was opened by H.E. Kem Gunawadh, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Information who read Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen’s message to this forum.
In his three-page message, the Premier appealed to all media practitioners to take part in preventing and eradicating the COVID-19 spread in the country, and fighting against fake news, and to stick to media professionalism.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen mentioned that some opportunists had used media and social network to disseminate fake news to distort the truth, inflate the situation to cause social chaos and unrest and put the blame on the Royal Government in order to overthrow it.
Samdech Techo Prime Minister spoke highly of all media practitioners who had paid high attention to their professionalism to share and disseminate true information to the public.
At the forum, Mr. Pen Bona, President of CCJ said that the forum, themed “Media’s Role in the Context of Global Pandemic Crisis and Fake News” encouraged all media practitioners to improve the media professionalism in line with digitalised skills and to join hands in combating fake news.
Cambodian media have been playing an important and highly responsible role during the COVID-19 pandemic, noted H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information, in his closing speech at the event.
H.E. Minister encouraged the media to further enhance media professionalism and skills, while the ministry is preparing to amend the existing press law in order to respond to the current situation of media development in Cambodia and ensure the freedom of expression.
The annual media gathering with Samdech Techo Hun Sen in January next year will be postponed due to COVID-19, said H.E. Khieu Kanharith, adding that the ministry will receive and submit requests from media practitioners to Samdech Techo Prime Minister to promote the media sector in the Kingdom.
