The Best Construction of Historical Importance 2018 Award will be officially conferred on Angkor Wat Temple of Cambodia by TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, on Aug. 9 in Siem Reap province.
The award ceremony will contribute to showing off the image and prestige of Cambodia on the international arena and to attracting more tourists to the Angkor Archeological Park, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
In May, the Khmer sacred temple was announced to be the Best Construction of Historical Importance 2018 among the top 25 famous historical constructions, after winning millions of votes from tourists around the world.
The world-renowned Angkor Wat, the symbol of Cambodia, topped the list of the Best Construction of Historical Importance for two years consecutively. The ancient temple was also crowned No. 1 among the top 10 landmarks for 2017 by TripAdvisor. In 2016, the temple got the first place among the 500 most fascinating tourist destinations around the world, in Lonely Planet, while in 2015 it won the No. 1 global must-see spot on the Lonely Planet's Ultimate Travel List and the No. 1 world landmark in the TripAdvisor Traveler's Choice Landmarks Awards. In 2014, Angkor Wat came out on top in an ArchaeoMadness competition organised by the Archeological Institute of America to mark the International Archeology Day.
Angkor Wat is located in the Angkor Archeological Park stretching over some 400 square kilometres, including forested area. The Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings, listed as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
