Monthly salary of wage earners up 6 pct in 2022

The average monthly salary of wage earners in South Korea rose 6 percent on-year in 2022, data showed Tuesday, on the back of higher income in the construction and transportation industries. South Korean wage earners took home a monthly average of 3.53 million won (US$2,650) in December 2022, rising from 3.33 million won tallied a year earlier, according to the report from Statistics Korea. The average salary of the median income bracket came to 2.67 million won, up 6.9 percent from the previous year. The figure for workers at conglomerates reached 5.91 million won, up 4.9 percent on-year. Those at small and midsized firms made 2.86 million won, up 7.2 percent over the period. Workers in the financial and insurance sector reported the highest monthly salary of 7.57 million won, up 4.3 percent on-year. Employees in the construction industry saw their monthly wage reach 3.01 million won, up 12.9 percent over the period. The transportation sector's wage came to 3.23 million won, rising 8.2 percent. The mo nthly pay for male wage earners went up 6.5 percent on-year to 4.14 million won in December 2022.
