A teacher in Warren County is accused of sexually assaulting a student over the course of two school years, authorities said Wednesday.
Michael J. Martino, 41, of the 200 block of Daffodil Drive in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, allegedly committed multiple acts of sexual penetration, including intercourse and a sex act, on a child between the ages of 16 and 18 between Sept. 1, 2009, through June 2011.
Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke announced the charges against Martino in a news release Thursday afternoon.
Martino was ordered held by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Robert Reed on $50,000 bail, Burke said. If he posts bail, Martino is ordered to have no contact with the victim, according to the release.
Martino was being held Thursday in Monroe County prison awaiting extradition to New Jersey, Burke said.
Martino was arrested Wednesday on one count of sexual assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
“At the time of the alleged offense, the defendant was in a supervisory capacity and had disciplinary power over the victim as the victim’s teacher,” Burke states in the release.
Lehighvalleylive.com was working to confirm where Martino was teaching at the time. The Warren County Prosecutor’s Office and Hackettstown Police Department investigated the allegations that led to Martino’s arrest, Burke said.
Both counts against Martino are second-degree crimes, punishable by up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison, upon conviction.
