The Socialist Republic of Vietnam has pledged to increase its import of cashew nuts from Cambodia.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, President of Vietnam's Cashew Nut Association, made the commitments during the meeting with Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries H.E. Veng Sakhon here in Phnom Penh recently.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh stressed that his association is studying seeds and substances of the cashew nuts in two Cambodia's provinces of Kampong Thom and Kratie.
The Vietnamese association president requested Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture to establish a cashew nut association so as to apply for Certificate of Origin (CO) that will ease the export of the crops.
As it now stands, according to Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, the Vietnam's Cashew Nut Association is among the biggest cashew nuts exporting companies globally, adding that the association has exported a total of 1.6 million tons of processed cashew nuts annually, while the demand for this product is about 3 million tons.
H.E. Veng Sakhon shared with Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh that Ministry of Commerce has already transferred the issuance of Certificate of Origin to local authorities and will also coordinate with relevant ministries and institutions to address emerging hurdles.
The minister encouraged the Vietnamese association president to promote the closer relations between the cashew nut producers and buyers so as to further grease exports.
Cambodia expects to export one million tons of cashew nuts in the near future. Last year, Vietnam alone imported around 100,000 tons of cashew nuts from Cambodia.
