Grown Diamonds Offer an Eco-friendly Diamond Alternate, Finds Frost & Sullivan

– Environmental impact remains a challenge for diamond industry; grown diamonds represent a long term solution

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Environmental impact generated by diamonds is starting to play a key role in the decision making process by both consumers and trade members. Years of research and technological advancements now offer the diamond industry a new choice of rough diamonds grown above the earth which is both eco-friendly and human friendly. Moreover, these cultured or grown diamonds offer a source of sustainable raw material for the industry in the long term with negligible environmental impact.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Environmental Impact Analysis – Production of Rough Diamonds based on a study comparing the environmental impact of grown diamonds and mined diamonds, depicts that growing diamonds cause significantly less environmental impact as compared to mining diamonds. There are several aspects of environmental impact such as air pollution, water usage, energy usage, etc. There is also a significant level of human impact as well in the process of diamond production. This report quantifies and compares each of these aspects for grown and mined diamonds per carat of diamond produced.

The study compares nine parameters encompassing environmental and human impact. There is also an overall benchmarking done on a ratio scale as well as on a combined scale revealing a total environmental impact rating

Frost & Sullivan’s environmental impact study indicates that the scale of difference in impact of mined and grown diamonds is very large. The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process used to grow diamonds is a cleaner process with a significantly lower environmental impact as compared to mining. Moreover, on the human impact front, diamond growing process necessitates maintaining a clean room environment and has no life or occupational hazards to their employees.

Some of the key areas of concern for mined diamonds continue to be air emissions and waste generation in the mining process. However, there are a number of sustainability initiatives that are being carried out by mined diamond producers focused on people, environment and economy. Such initiatives include funding local hospitals, running programs to counter HIV and AIDS, protecting biodiversity in the region, etc. Most of these initiatives are long term in nature and are targeted at benefiting the region of operation in a more sustainable manner.

While mined diamond industry continues to pump in time and resources to control and reverse the environmental damage, the scale of impact generated is too significant to be ignored. Also, in some cases restoring the environment to a state of no impact is highly improbable, especially if the impact is continuous rather than one time. Moreover, there are issues in ascertaining the extent of the impact as well as they may not be recorded or tracked due to differing laws and regulations across countries. The impact generated by mining continues even after the diamond production from a mine ceases.

On the human impact side, the extent of hazards in diamond mining is quite intense ranging from mine explosions trapping miners and equipment accidents, to workplace induced illnesses such as tuberculosis, permanent hearing loss, slow poisoning and increased cancer risk. However, the nature of this impact is quite visible and is under constant focus and monitoring by the companies in the mined diamond industry as they continue to strive for zero harm.

However, for grown diamond industry, challenges in tracking are minimal as the process of growth happens in a “greenhouse” setup that is easy to track, monitor and control in terms of environmental, social or any other kind of impact.

Sustainability in the diamond industry will continue to be a key concern as it will impact both the environment as well as buying patterns of consumers. From a supply perspective, cultured or grown diamonds offer an option to cater to the new consumer segment looking for an eco and human friendly product.

Emery Oleochemicals’ Natural-based Solutions Designed to Safeguard the Future of Bees, Credited as ‘Non-toxic’

CINCINNATI, Ohio, December 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Various organisations around the world have placed great importance to ensure the sustainability of the food supply, which is reliant on pollinators such as honey bees, native bees, birds, bats and butterflies. These pollinators, particularly honey bee colonies, are affected as a result of four primary factors: poor nutrition, pathogens, parasites [varroa mites] and insecticides. In recognising the need for non-toxic and renewable-based products to safe-guard against the population decline of honey bees, Emery Oleochemicals, through a recently completed evaluation by an independent testing laboratory, has concluded that the range of fatty acids offered as part of the EMERION™ 7000 and 8000 series are non-toxic and pollinator-friendly.

The EMERION™ 7000 product in itself, currently available in the marketplace, consists of ammonium nonanoate; and has been designed to complement the current portfolio of non-selective herbicide and bioactive ingredients suitable for all crops and home and garden. Also tested was the EMERION™ 8300, which offers natural-based properties through a custom blend of C8, C9 and C10 fatty acids in clay. Further formulations are currently being undertaken for this product.

The evaluation was conducted by an independent and AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) accredited contract research facility focused on the professional assessment of products in the areas of mammalian and environmental toxicology, animal health, entomology, analytical services, and in vitro studies. The objective of the study was to ascertain the acute contact toxicity of the Emery Oleochemicals’ products when administered to honey bees.

In this test, the colony of Apis mellifera – worker honey bee, that is disease and pest free with no previous pesticide exposure, were observed for a total of 48 hours. The species, selected as part of regulatory guidelines for these types of studies, were carefully tested by experts to ensure there are no significant differences in mortality between the test substance group and the control in bees. Tests results showed that toxicity to be greater than 100 microgram a.i./bee and therefore, non-toxic to honey bees.

Species such as honey bees are said by researchers to be responsible for pollinating around one-third of the world’s crop production. In US alone, honey bees are reported to add more than USD$15bn in value to local agriculture and over USD$29bn annually in Europe. With increasing concern from farmers and the community alike on the collapse of the bee population, industry players are hard pressed to look at alternatives and improvements to current farming practices.

The timely introduction of these new products precedes Emery Oleochemicals’ next effort which is to determine the efficacy of the EMERION™ fatty acid blend in controlling the varroa mite. In addition, the company plans to demonstrate that its natural-based solutions ensure the safety of consumers and the environment – addressing the rising global concern of food production security, sustainability of crop growth and the impact of farming practices on the environment.

With a strong portfolio in renewable agricultural solutions, Emery Oleochemicals’ Agro Green business unit offers a wide range of products with applications ranging from weed and crop management, surfactants, abiotic stress control, solvents, de-suckering agents and herbicides. Currently its trademark portfolio includes EMERION™, EMERLIFE™, EMTROL™ and EMEREEN™ with solutions that are additionally OMRI® certified, providing the marketplace with alternative, natural-based solutions that focuses on the need for environmentally responsible agrochemical formulations. Its product innovations provide continued advancements in agricultural productivity, meeting today’s evolving farming practices towards sustainable living.

U.N. Biodiversity Convention Opens in S. Korea

SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Some 20,000 government officials, environmentalists and businesspeople from around the world gathered in the eastern city of Pyeongchang on Monday for a U.N. environmental convention on biodiversity, the environment ministry said.

The 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, dubbed COP 12, kicked off with a ceremony for a 19-day run, with about 20,000 representatives from 194 countries attending, the ministry said.

During the conference themed “Biodiversity for sustainable development,” the participants will address agenda items that include a midterm evaluation of a 2011-2020 strategic plan for biodiversity and the application of the biodiversity goals to the post-2015 U.N. sustainable development goals.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), informally known as the Biodiversity Convention, was adopted at the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development (UNECD) held in Brazil in 1992 to address environmental problems facing the planet.

The multilateral treaty handling all aspects of biological diversity, including genetic resources, species and ecosystems, is one of the three U.N. conventions aimed at protecting the environment along with the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention to Combat Desertification.

Also to be held during the Pyeongchang conference is the 7th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Sept. 29-Oct. 3) and the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (Oct. 13-17).

The COP 12 will adopt a “Pyeongchang Road Map” that sets out ways to achieve U.N. sustainable development goals and a “Gangwon Declaration” containing the results of the conference.

The Gangwon Declaration is expected to include the South Korean government’s interest in the preservation of biodiversity in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) located at the inter-Korean border.

South Korea will make it an eco-friendly conference and a chance to enhance the value of preserving biological diversity in the world,” said Kim Sang-hoon, director general of the Korean Secretariat of the U.N. Biodiversity Conference 2014.

“We expect this will be a good opportunity for Gangwon Province to increase the world’s awareness of Pyeongchang, the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics in the province, and its capacity to host a large-scale international event ahead of the Olympics.”

International bio expo kicks off in S. Korea

Hosted by the government of North Chungcheong Province, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the local municipal government, the Osong International Bio Industry Exposition began its 17-day run after a brief opening ceremony in Osong, some 120 kilometers south of Seoul.

Under the theme of “The Secret of Life, Beautiful Future,” the expo will showcase how the nation’s bio industry has developed over the past decades and provide a glimpse into a future employing many of the industry’s finest innovations.

The official opening ceremony is scheduled to be held in the afternoon with hundreds of dignitaries from the central and provincial governments, lawmakers and other figures from all walks of life attending.

The ceremony will be followed by performances by popular Korean pop artists. Before the ceremony, there will be an air show and traditional Korean music and B-boy dance performances, according to the organizers.

Visitors will also experience diverse medical treatments with the latest technologies, such as the diagnosis of a disease with a drop of blood, and get information on life-threatening diseases.

Visitors will also have the chance to make cosmetics and conduct scientific experiments to learn basic knowledge about the life sciences, according to the organizer.

Among various outdoor exhibitions, large-scale model organs are to be on display, and several rides featuring human cells will allow visitors to learn about science in a unique way, according to the organizers.

A rare cloned puppy, “Donggyeong,” created by a veterinary professor at Seoul National University, Lee Byeong-cheon, and his team earlier this month will also be there to meet visitors.

Organizers say the expo will host 303 companies from in and outside of the country and some 700 buyers.

“We prepared diverse special events that will stimulate five senses of visitors,” said Lee Cha-yeong, secretary-general of the expo’s organizing committee. “The nation’s largest bio festival will unfold right before your eyes.”

CO2 Emissions Bury the UN Climate Summit: Why Carbon Capture and Storage is a Critical Part of the Solution to Climate Change

GENEVA, Switzerland, Sept. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ —

A coal pile buries the UN Headquarters and New York is lost under a mountain of CO
2
. These scenes, illustrating actual quantities, bring home the sheer scale of global carbon emissions and the urgency for action.

To view the Multimedia News Release, please click:
http://www.multivu.com/players/English/72762541-wbcsd-carbon-capture-and-storage

This four-minute film launched today allows us to visualize the critical part carbon capture and storage (CCS) can play in limiting global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The animation is a call to help catalyze action to reduce carbon emissions.

Led by the WBCSD, Action2020 is a science-based platform for business action on sustainable development to 2020 and beyond, covering a range of solutions addressing the key mitigation levers for climate change. This animation, supported by companies working on the CCS business solution, focuses on this technology, one of the essential solutions at risk of being overlooked.

Today we get over 80% of our energy from fossil fuels. To stay below 2 degrees Celsius warming, we cannot emit more than 1 trillion tonnes of carbon. World population is expected to rise to 9 billion by 2050, doubling energy demand. The most ambitious plans to replace fossil fuels see only about half of our energy needs being met by zero-carbon renewables by 2050. With the rise in energy demand, the concentration of CO2 will exceed the agreed limit of dangerous climate change.

To stay within emissions targets, we must have CCS in our portfolio. CCS keeps CO2 out of the atmosphere by returning emissions below several layers of rock into the geosphere. A price on CO2 coupled with ambitious reduction targets would help CCS to be deployed extensively. We need a robust technology, policy, legal and infrastructure pathway to be implemented now.

Peter Bakker, President and CEO of the WBCSD said:

“WBCSD’s Action2020 platform presents a range of solutions that together will generate bold action on climate change. As part of this, we asked Carbon Visuals to create a piece of compelling narrative which took us from global fossil fuel use to focus on carbon capture and storage, an essential, but often overlooked contributor to staying below 2 degrees Celsius global warming. The resulting animation is both informative and starkly engaging. Among all of the documents, reports and images being released around the UN summit, we hope that this film will stand out and benefit all participants, as well as anyone who watches it around the world.”

The WBCSD, a CEO-led organization of some 200 forward-thinking global companies, is committed to galvanizing the global business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment. http://www.wbcsd.org.
