Donato, 74, died last Tuesday. He was being treated for pancreatic cancer in Toms River.
Friends and family members say Donato died “too young.”
“He was very devoted,” said the Rev. Frank Cuozzo, of New Durham Baptist Church in North Bergen, who is related to Donato by marriage. “A great man, a godly man … he cared about people in a personal way.”
Donato was born and raised in Jersey City, attending Holy Rosary Elementary School and St. Michael High School before entering the Seton Hall University’s seminary school, which he graduated from in 1961.
He was a pastor at churches in Hillsdale, Bayonne, Ramsey and Livingston from 1965 to 2003, finally coming to St. Henry in 2004. That same year, he was ordained as a bishop.
The Rev. Thomas P. Nydegger will preside over today’s service, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
