Khmer Silk Research Centre will appear soon in the compound of the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP).
Under the financial support of US$90,000 from the Government of Japan with the RUPP's contribution, the construction of the research centre, which takes the shape of silkworm cocoon, will complete in the near future.
Once operated, the Khmer Silk Research Centre will contribute to promoting community development, boosting Cambodia's silk industry and meeting local demand as the country imports some 400 tons of silk per year worth around US$30 million.
Currently, Cambodia has about 11 hectares of mulberry trees in Kampong Speu province.
