ECCC: Second National Co-Lawyer to Represent Mr. Nuon Chea Assigned

The Defence Support Section (DSS) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has assigned Mr. Liv Sovanna as the second national Co-Lawyer to represent former Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea Mr. Nuon Chea in Case 002/02.

According to a press statement of ECCC, Mr. Liv Sovanna is a Cambodian lawyer with over 20 years of experience in private practice. From 2013 to 2017, he sewed as a legal consultant on the Nuon Chea Defence Team, including throughout the Case 002/02 trial. He is currently a member of the Council of Jurists at the Council of Ministers and serves as the Vice-Secretary General of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia. He is also a professor at the Bar's Lawyers Training Centre. Mr. Liv Sovanna holds an LLM from the Cambodian University of Specialties and an LLB (second generation) from the Professional Training School of Cambodia.

Mr. Liv Sovanna will work alongside Cambodian Co-Lawyer Mr. Son Arun and foreign Co-Lawyer Ms. Doreen Chen to represent Mr. Nuon Chea before the ECCC. In making the assignment, the DSS took into consideration Mr. Nuon Chea's expressed preferences and all the applicable conflict waivers.
