Infrastructure connectivity in ASEAN is the main drive for the regional growth and the single market by 2025, said ASEAN transport ministers.
Speaking at the panel discussion on ASEAN's connectivity conundrum held in Phnom Penh on May 11 as part of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2017, ASEAN transport ministers and the participants actively discussed and exchanged their discussion on road, railway, energy grid, and power transmission regional connectivity.
The inter-connectivity between country and country in the region will help attract foreign investment to the bloc and facilitate transport goods and people, particularly the strong young workforces, they added.
H.E. Sun Chanthol, Cambodian Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transports said better connectivity of physical infrastructure is crucial to lure foreign direct investment, efficient low-cost goods transportation, and tourist arrivals.
More investment on infrastructure connectivity between Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos is really important for Cambodia, he said.
H.E. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Thai Minister of Transports, said that cross-border infrastructure is important for facilitating the cross-border investment for a country to neighbouring countries, but that cross-border connectivity regulation among ASEAN countries is needed.
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank President Mr. Jin Liqun said the AIIB sees infrastructure as the key to promoting economic and social development and reducing poverty. Crucial to this is the need to bring together the 10 South-East Asian countries and deepen their economic integration. We understand how important it is for all the countries of ASEAN to be connected, he noted.
According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, Cambodia is looking for more fund and investment to realise her infrastructure connectivity ambition.
Cambodia is working with Vietnam to build Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh expressway and is conducting feasibility studies to construct a road to connect to Laos, said H.E. Minister.
