KUALA LUMPUR, Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) today held its inaugural Technology Day, TechConnect 2023, which aimed to link innovators with potential funders to help accelerate decarbonisation and sustainability solutions.
UTP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said the TechConnect 2023 is also a testament to UTP's commitment to advancing sustainable practices through innovative solutions.
“Our aspiration is to break away from traditional, single-discipline silos and instead bring together our industry partners to create an ecosystem that drives innovation,” he said in his speech at the TechConnect 2023 here today.
He said the ecosystem called NEXUS will be streamlined as UTP’s Research, Innovation and Commercialisation agenda to increase the number of participating students and researchers in bringing new products or services to market at a start-up speed, at both national and international level.
Themed “Reshaping Tomorrow: Decarbonisation for a Sustainable Future,” the event served as a strategic platform to showcase and promote UTP's cutting-edge technological advancements in decarbonisation.
Mohamed Ibrahim said the event's initiative is aligned with the university's dedication to supporting Petronas’ goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions (NZCE) by 2050 which is to reduce carbon intensity through innovations in carbon capture, renewables, hydrogen, and clean energy.
“We strive to propel innovation that not only addresses global challenges, but also significantly contributes to a sustainable future through research, education, and sustainable practices,” he said.
Meanwhile, PETRONAS Corporate Strategy senior vice-president Mazuin Ismail, who officiated the event, said TechConnect 2023 served as a pivotal catalyst in propelling decarbonisation commitments into actionable initiatives as it connects stakeholders across the innovation value chain, fostering collaboration and accelerating the transition towards a net zero future.
The TechConnect 2023 is a collaboration with the Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) and Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) and was officiated by Mazuin.
The event included a Pitch and Chill session, which provided a platform for 14 innovators to present their technologies to the panel comprising MPRC, MRANTI and Malaysian Technology Development Corporation Sdn. Bhd.
The session provided an opportunity for the innovators to receive feedback on their pitching, as well as connect with potential investors and funders to accelerate the development and take-up of their technologies.
Meanwhile, attendees were also provided with business matching sessions aimed at promoting UTP’s decarbonisation technologies to investors.
