New vice FM vows efforts to enhance S. Korea’s diplomacy at ‘grave’ time

First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun pledged Wednesday he will work to help elevate South Korea's diplomacy at a "grave" time in the face of global challenges from the wars in Europe and the Middle East to the U.S.-China rivalry. Kim, who officially took office Monday, made the remarks during a brief meeting with the local press, saying he believes "crises always bring opportunities." The first vice foreign minister in South Korea handles bilateral diplomacy. "I feel a great sense of responsibility as I am taking on the role of vice minister at such a grave time ... We expect (to see) a lot of these challenges (continue) this year as well," Kim told reporters, as he mentioned the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group, and Russia's war in Ukraine. "I will strive to assist the new foreign minister in a way that Korea's diplomacy can contribute to the livelihoods and future of our people," Kim said. "I will also do my best to help realize the Yoon Suk Yeol government's diplomatic initiative for the global pivotal state," he added. Kim, a retired veteran diplomat, was serving as the ambassador to Germany until his appointment last week. Kim is known for his extensive knowledge and experience in the United States, and North Korea-related issues, having served as the top nuclear envoy from 2016-19. Source: Yonhap News Agency
