Mekong Water Quality in Stung Treng Not Yet Affected by Incidental Contamination in Laos

The water quality of the Mekong River in the Cambodian province of Stung Treng, at the border with Laos, has not yet been affected by the sulfuric acid spill incident at the Nam Khan River in Laos, confirmed the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) in an additional announcement released this afternoon. This is the result of water quality inspection conducted at two key areas in Stung Treng province on April 10 by technical officials of MOWRAM and the Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, the source pointed out. MOWRAM and the Cambodian National Mekong Committee has been paying high attention to and monitory closely the possible impacts of the incident on the water quality of the Mekong River in Cambodia. The incident took place at the Nam Khan River -a Lao tributary of the Mekong River in Luong Prabang province - on April 3, 2024 at a point of the river, some 1,370 kilometres from the Cambodian-Lao borderline, wherein a truck carrying about 30 tonnes of sulfuric acid co llapsed, but not all the load fell into the river.
