(LEAD) Kishida considering visit to S. Korea next month for summit with Yoon: report

TOKYO/SEOUL, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is considering visiting South Korea in late March and holding a summit with President Yoon Suk Yeol, a Japanese media outlet reported Wednesday. Kishida is seeking to make the trip on March 20, ahead of South Korea's general elections set for April 10, Japanese broadcaster Fuji News Network reported. If realized, it would mark a second visit by the Japanese leader amid the significant warming of bilateral relations following Seoul's resolution to the issue of compensating Korean victims of Japan's wartime forced labor. Kishida's planned visit would coincide with the time when Seoul will host the opening games of the Major League Baseball regular season. The Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the teams participating in the games, has Japanese star hitter Shohei Ohtani, and whether Yoon and Kishida will watch the game together may also be another point of attention, according to the news report. A South Korean presidential official told reporters, however, that "nothing is being planned at the moment" regarding Kishida's visit. The two countries have resumed shuttle diplomacy, or regular visits by leaders, as the bilateral ties improved. Last year alone, Yoon and Kishida met seven times, including the two summits in each other's country in March and May last year. Source: Yonhap News Agency
