JERSEY CITY — A 44-year-old Jersey City man has been charged this week with sexually assaulting the 11-year-old daughter of his then-girlfriend inside the girl’s home, authorities said.
Anthony K. Brown was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated sexual assault, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse. Brown remains in the Hudson County jail in Kearny, where he is being held on bail of $200,000 cash or bond.
The criminal complaint said the probable cause for the charges against Brown is the “sworn statement of victim, witness and medical findings.” The complaint also said Brown used a screwdriver to break into the apartment the girl shares with her mother.
The girl’s mother, who contacted The Jersey Journal, said she lives on the top floor of a duplex while her mother lives on the first floor. On the day of the incident, the 11-year-old was upstairs and her grandmother was downstairs. The girl’s grandmother saw Brown walking down the stairs and leaving the building, her mother said.
The grandmother “went upstairs to check on my daughter and that’s when (the girl) told her what happened,” the 32-year-old mother said, adding that the girl’s grandmother found a screwdriver in the apartment and a package for tools on the stairs. “It looked like he pried my front door open. There were wood chips.”
The grandmother called the girl’s mother immediately. The mother said “I broke down. I panicked. I called the police right away.”
Brown could not be reached to comment on the charges and it could not be determined if he has an attorney.
The girl’s mother said she met Brown, who lives next door, in January 2013 and they began dating, but did not live together. She said at the time of the alleged assault, “We were on the verge of a breakup. We were going through difficult times.”
