Election watchdog busts over 200 deepfakes related to April elections

SEOUL, The National Election Commission (NEC) said Tuesday it found more than 200 deepfakes related to the April parliamentary elections in violation of the election law and took steps for the removal of the content. The 207 deepfakes, or digitally manipulated audio or video materials, were among some 60,815 cases of illegal online content found to have flouted the election rules, the NEC said in a release. Separately, the NEC also reported 469 violations that mostly included illegal electioneering. Of the total violations, the NEC filed complaints with law enforcement for 95 cases and it requested 10 of them be investigated. It issued warnings and took other administrative measures for the remaining 364 cases. In one of the campaigning violations, a labor union head in the southeastern province of North Gyeongsang, was caught using the labor group to campaign for a specific potential candidate prior to the primary. An official from the campaign committee of a regional primary contender in South Gyeongs ang Province offered cash to a resident for organizing a tourist bus for friends and letting the official's team use the bus to campaign. The Public Official Election Act bans the production, editing, distribution and posting of any election campaign-related audio, images or videos created using artificial intelligence and other similar technologies for the 90 days prior to the election day. The NEC said it also took steps on some 156 online news articles for apparent violation of fair election reporting. Source: Yonhap News Agency
