Cambodian PM Calls for Daily Tree Planting

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has appealed to his compatriots to plant trees every day, not only on the Arbour Day.

“I would like to call on all compatriots to plant trees every day, not only on July 9 as Arbour Day. We shall plant trees everywhere in the country, in schools, pagodas and other places. Particularly, we must join hands to prevent deforestation,” he tweeted on Monday.

This year, the Arbour Day was celebrated in Kampong Chhnang province under the royal presidency of His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia.

On the occasion, some 13,000 young trees of rare and luxurious species were planted on an area of 10 hectares.

The Arbour Day was initiated in 1952 by His Majesty the late King-Father, Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk. This annual event was suspended for many years due to civil war and resumed in 1989.

Since then, Cambodia observes the Arbour Day every year under the presidency of His Majesty the King who always pays high attention to reforestation and natural resource conservation.
