U.S. Lauds Cambodia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN

The U.S. has spoken highly of Cambodia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair during this challenging year, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Personal Assistant to the Cambodian Premier.

While paying a courtesy visit to Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen here at the Peace Palace this evening, visiting H.E. Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the U.S. House of Representative Foreign Affairs Committee noted that Cambodia has successfully hosted many summits such as the ASEAN Summits and Related Summits and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), especially at a time when the world is facing geopolitical tensions.

This shows Cambodia’s leadership that others find difficult to do, he underlined.

H.E. Gregory W. Meeks also expressed the U.S.’ commitment to strengthen the cooperation with Cambodia and ASEAN, both between their executive and legislative bodies.

In reply, Samdech Techo Prime Minister thanked the U.S. for supporting Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship by hosting a summit (ASEAN-U.S. Special Leaders’ Summit) in the U.S. and attending summits in Cambodia. In addition, a meeting was held between the U.S. secretary of defence and the Chinese defence minister in Siem Reap province on Tuesday.

Regarding the Cambodia-U.S. relationship, he noted, it is now better than ever. The two-way trade increased by about 18 percent with the active presence of Ford and General Electric (GE) in Cambodia.
