Timor-Leste Hopefully to Become ASEAN Member in 2022 or 2023

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and Chair of ASEAN for 2022, said hopefully Timor-Leste will become the youngest member of ASEAN in 2022 or the following year.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the new office building of the General Department of Customs and Excise in Phnom Penh this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the ASEAN Political-Security Community Fact-Finding Mission (APSC FFM) has already visit Timor-Leste as part of the assessment of Timor-Leste’s readiness to become a member of ASEAN, therefore the ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Fact-Finding Missions should also visit Timor-Leste in order to let the country become an ASEAN member during the ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh or in Indonesia.

Cambodia is one of the ASEAN Member States that have supported Timor-Leste’s membership application. Timor-Lest joined the ASEAN Regional Forum in 2005, and officially applied for the ASEAN membership on Mar. 4, 2011.
