Over 1,000 government officials, representatives of development agencies, the public and other relevant stakeholders have gathered to cheer the International Day for Biological Diversity 2019 at Mondulkiri province.
Themed Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health, the event was organised today by the General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, local authority and other concerned institutions.
According to Deputy Secretary General of the General Gecretariat H.E. Ms. Chan Somaly, the gathering intends to further promote the effective management of biodiversity in Cambodia among all competent authorities and development partners.
It is also an opportunity to create more awareness among the public about indispensable benefit of biodiversity and ecological system for lives, she continued.
Representing the environment ministry, Under Secretary of State H.E. Chea Samnang echoed the insights, highlighting the inseparable linkage between food system, nutrition and health and biodiversity.
Meeting the commitment to preserve biodiversity and ecological system, he added, will consequently contribute to climate change reduction and adaptation, better access to clean water and improvement of food security.
Cambodia became a party state of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in 1995, three years after its formation.
This year is the sixth observation of the International Day for Biological Diversity officially falling on May 22.
The celebration of the day at Mondulkiri � covered with wild landscape and home to rare and endangered wildlife � also entailed various public engagement and awareness building activities, including games and quiz.
