28 Chinese: Exhibition explodes narrow perspectives of contemporary art in China

SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — This June, visitors to the Asian Art Museum will get a snapshot of some of China’s most exciting artists from the country’s booming contemporary art scene. The museum’s special summer exhibition 28 Chinese offers glimpses of contemporary Chinese art through a group of 28 artists, ranging from those in the spotlight like Liu Wei, He Xiangyu, Huang Yong Ping and Xu Zhen to the internationally acclaimed Zhang Huan and Ai Weiwei. These artists have made a significant impact on the art world and expanded definitions of contemporary art in China. On view June 5 through Aug. 16 at the Asian Art Museum, the exhibition features 48 artworks, revealing powerful responses to China today, as well as perspectives and attitudes towards tradition.

28 Chinese is the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of exploration and research by art collectors Don and Mera Rubell. Between 2001 and 2012, the Rubells conducted six research trips to China, where they visited 100 artists’ studios in Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Xi’an. The Rubells acquired artworks from 28 artists in a multiplicity of mediums, from painting and installation to photography and new media. Organized by guest curator Allison Harding, the Asian Art Museum’s presentation will be the first exhibition on the West Coast for many of these artists.

While artworks in 28 Chinese are only a sample of all that Chinese contemporary art has to offer, they represent a few of the most notable Chinese artists working today, as identified by two preeminent art collectors. A highlight of the exhibition is Zhu Jinshi’s monumental installation, Boat, which is 12 meters long, made from 8,000 sheets of paper commonly used in Chinese calligraphy and painting. Visitors will notice row upon row of carefully stacked paper overlapping bamboo rods suspended from the ceiling with cotton thread. Another highlight is a large scale painting by Li Shurui from her Light series—works that reproduce the look and feel of light in different environments, from arctic landscapes to nightclubs. The exhibition also features Ai Weiwei’s Table with Two Legs (2008), Xu Zhen’s embroidered canvases, He Xiangyu’s installation Cola Project (2009–2010), Qiu Zhijie’s Tattoo-2, (2000) and a screening room featuring a wide range of new video works, including Huang Ran’s Blithe Tragedy (2011) and Fang Lu’s Lovers Are Artists (Part One) (2012).

Following the Asian Art Museum’s presentation of 28 Chinese, the exhibition will travel to the San Antonio Museum of Art (Sept. 5, 2015–Jan. 4, 2016). The exhibition premiered in Miami at the Rubell Family Collection on Dec. 4, 2013 and was on view through Aug. 1, 2014.

Over the past 15 years, the Asian Art Museum has made a concentrated effort to include contemporary art in its exhibition programs and acquisition pursuits. On Sept. 4 the museum will present First Look: Collecting Contemporary at the Asian, an original exhibition showcasing contemporary art in the museum’s collection.

Tourism Operators On A Mission To Promote NSW In China

SYDNEY, March 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Tourism operators from across NSW will travel to China this week to sell the State as a destination of choice to key Chinese travel partners.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said more than 30 NSW tourism operators will take part in the mission, which runs from 22-28 March in Wuhan and Guangzhou, two cities identified as target markets in NSW’s China Tourism Strategy 2012-2020.

“This initiative helps us take advantage of the growing demand from China, with NSW operators showcasing experiences on offer in our State to key Chinese trade partners, increasing their knowledge and awareness of our destinations and products,” Ms. Chipchase said.

“It will also assist NSW suppliers to build and strengthen their relationships with Chinese product managers, and provide opportunities to contract with wholesalers.

China is our State’s top inbound visitor market. In the year ending September, more than 443,000 Chinese visitors stayed 12.1 million nights in NSW, spending more than $1.5 billion, so it’s important we continue to work with the Chinese travel trade industry to further increase the number of Chinese visitors to NSW and ensure NSW remains the most popular destination,” she said.

Destination NSW has invited participating operators to extend their stay in China to take part in a roadshow being run as part of a campaign with China Travel International Guangdong.

“Operators attending the mission have been invited to take part in the Guilin leg of this roadshow, which will visit six key cities within South China to promote Sydney and NSW itineraries and further develop emerging markets,” Ms. Chipchase said.

Market Overview

2014 saw two very contrasting half year performances, with total gaming revenue in H1 increasing 13% year-on-year and registering an all-time monthly high in February of $36.9 billion, up 40% year-on-year. However, a confluence of factors such as the FIFA World Cup, China’s soft economic landing, rising costs and the Chinese austerity program etc., weighed on the market in the second half resulting in 3% decline in full year total gaming revenue to $341.3 billion. Encouragingly, visitor numbers to the Macau region grew faster than the previous year, increasing by 8% year-on-year to 31.5 million. Visitors from the Mainland increased at an even faster rate of 14% and now represent 67% of total visitors to Macau (2013: 64%).

Underscoring Macau’s continuing appeal as a vibrant and dynamic tourism and leisure hub catering to a broader customer base, mass revenue increased by 16% year-on-year to $120.9 billion, now accounting for approximately 35% of the Macau market. VIP revenue in the year decreased by 11% year-on-year to $206.3 billion. It remains the largest segment of the market, accounting for approximately 60% of total gaming revenue.

GEG expects the structural shift in the market to mass to continue in the coming years as visitors are drawn to a number of major new projects in Macau that will greatly enhance its MICEE, recreational, dining, retail and entertainment offer, and nearby Hengqin undergoes a transformation into a new regional business and leisure hub. Major planned future infrastructure improvements such as the Taipa Ferry Terminal, the Macau Light Rail Transit and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, are expected to facilitate greater visitor numbers by improving access to Macau and connectivity within the territory. GEG’s complementary properties and Cotai development pipeline leave it well placed to cater for a new type of visitors looking for more holistic holiday and leisure experiences.

Group Financial Results

The Group’s revenue and Adjusted EBITDA for the full year climbed 9% year-on-year to $71.8 billion and by 5% year-on-year to $13.2 billion, respectively, despite a challenging second half of the year. Net profit attributable to shareholders increased 3% year-on-year to $10.3 billion. The results were largely due to Galaxy Macau™ where Adjusted EBITDA grew 12% year-on-year. StarWorld Macau posted a 6% year-on-year decrease in Adjusted EBITDA as challenging market conditions impacted its VIP business in the second half of the year. City Clubs and the Construction Materials Division contributed Adjusted EBITDA of $166 million and $465 million, respectively.

A key contributing factor in the Group’s earnings was the solid performance in the mass segment. Galaxy Macau™’s mass revenue increased from $10.5 billion in 2013 to $12.1 billion in 2014 (up 16%), with StarWorld Macau delivering growth of 12% year-on-year to $4.3 billion. In addition, Galaxy Macau™ also achieved very healthy volume and revenue growth in the VIP segment, with the latter gaining 20% year-on-year to $31.7 billion.

The Group’s total gaming revenue for 2014 on a management basis[1] grew 9% year-on-year to $71.0 billion driven by solid increases in VIP and Mass. Total Mass revenue increased 12% year-on-year to $18.8 billion while VIP revenue climbed 8% year-on-year to $50.4 billion. Electronic gaming revenue also grew 3% year-on-year to $1.8 billion.

Balance Sheet and Special Dividends

The Group’s balance sheet remains well capitalised and liquid, with cash on hand of $9 billion and a net cash position of $8.2 billion as of 31 December 2014. The Group had debt of $790 million. In the year, GEG returned capital to shareholders by paying two special dividends of $0.70 per share and $0.45 per share on 31 July 2014 and 31 October 2014, respectively. Subsequently, the Group has announced another special dividend of $0.28 per share payable on or about 22 May 2015. Galaxy Macau™ celebrated its third year anniversary in May 2014 and continues to be the growth engine of the Group. The property posted revenue of $46.9 billion, up 18% on the prior year, which translated to a 12% increase in Adjusted EBITDA to $9.9 billion. ROI[2] was 58% for 2014.

Adjusted EBITDA margin under HKFRS and under US GAAP fell by one percentage point year-on-year to 21% and 30%, respectively.

Fourth quarter Adjusted EBITDA was $2.0 billion, a year-on-year reduction of 19%, as market conditions were worse than expected in the second half of the year.

VIP Gaming Performance

Total VIP rolling chip volume for the year was $941.7 billion, up almost 22% on last year. This generated revenue of $31.7 billion (2013: $26.5 billion), an increase of 20% year-on-year. The property closed out the year with fourth quarter VIP net win of $7.4 billion, down 10% year-on-year but up 2% sequentially.

StarWorld Macau

StarWorld Macau generated revenue of $22.6 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of $3.5 billion in 2014, decreases of 4% and 6% year-on-year, respectively. Fourth quarter Adjusted EBITDA decreased 38% year-on-year to $645 million. Strong prior year comparatives and challenging market conditions in the second half of the year were all factors impacting results.

Adjusted EBITDA margin in the year decreased by one percentage point year-on-year to 15% under HKFRS and remained at 25% under US GAAP in 2014. The property generated an ROI[3] of 96% for 2014.

VIP Gaming Performance

StarWorld Macau reported VIP rolling chip volume of $622.8 billion in 2014, down 6% on the previous year. This translated to revenue of $17.8 billion (2013: $19.1 billion). Fourth quarter revenue was lower 29% year-on-year.

Cotai Phases 3 & 4

Final plans for Phases 3 and 4 of GEG on Cotai are almost complete and site investigation works are expected to begin in 2015. Once these phases are operational, GEG will have realised its overall target of investing $100 billion in Cotai and will have doubled its footprint in Cotai to 2 million square metres, adding thousands of new hotel rooms to the Group’s portfolio.


In early 2014 GEG entered into a framework agreement for a 2.7 square kilometer land parcel to move forward with the proposed development of a world class, low density leisure and entertainment destination resort on Hengqin. Plans are moving apace and GEG expects the development to be highly complementary to its existing and planned portfolio.

City Clubs delivered Adjusted EBITDA of $166 million in 2014, a decrease of 8% year-on-year.

“With all eyes on the Sydney Opera House, Lighting of the Sails will once again take its place as the centrepiece of the amazing light spectacular during Vivid Sydney, with Universal Everything promising awe-inspiring projections that will reimagine the architecture as a living mural, with a diverse series of vibrant, hand-drawn sequences.

Vivid Music will introduce its most expansive program yet, featuring more shows and venues and an impressive line-up of local and international talent,” she said.

The Hoodoo Gurus will perform an exclusive one-off show at the Powerhouse Museum and a new line up of cutting edge, innovative performances will be held across the city at new venues Goodgod Small Club, Oxford Art Factory and Freda’s, with the Seymour Centre, The Basement, The Argyle and Barrio Cellar part of the line-up again in 2015.

Japanese artist Yuki Matsueda who gained a reputation for his surreal 3-dimensional artworks — will exhibit his largest art piece ever, The King’s Vacation, at the Ocean Terminal Forecourt of Harbour City. Meanwhile, Harbour City’s “Gallery by the Harbour” will exhibit the hand-drawn drafts and photos of “wrapping” public buildings, bridges and even coastlines created by internationally-acclaimed “Land Art” artists Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude. Atrium I and II of Gateway Arcade will also exhibit contemporary sculptures from Korean artists, BYUN Kyung-soo and KIM Byung-jin.

Moreover, Harbour City invites children to participate in the “Exchange Smile!” charity campaign and submit their smiling face paintings from now till 22nd March, 2015. Harbour City will donate a new box of coloured pencils to “The Salvation Army” for each work collected. All coloured pencils will be given to children in need. Collected works may also be displayed at “Little Art Castle” at Ocean Terminal of Harbour City in March. 

Harbour City also partners with several fashion brands including 3.1 Phillip Lim, ANTEPRIMA WIREBAG, ATSURO TAYAMA, Furla, Lane Crawford, PENNYBLACK & Paul Smith to organize the Fashion Hearts Art campaign. Boutiques will feature artistic in-store arrangements in the format of window displays, pop-up exhibitions and installations. During the weekend of 14-15 Mar, special offers will be also available to delight shoppers in designated stores. “Beyond the Space” Public Art Exhibition at Harbour City

AHAF Hong Kong 2015 will further extend the popular exhibition and launch the “Beyond the Space” Public Art Exhibition at Harbour City. To bring art closer to the public, mega art installations, sculpture works, paintings and photographs by artists from around the world will be displayed at different locations around the mall.

a) The King’s Vacation by Yuki Matsueda @ Ocean Terminal Forecourt

After graduating with a PhD in Design from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Japanese artist Yuki Matsueda has gained a global reputation for his 3D artworks and “escaping” graphics. The artist has been known for capturing the incredible moments when ordinary objects escape from their graphics which result in some lively 3D works.
Matsueda made sure to go big for his first ever outdoor exhibition as he created his largest art piece ever, The King’s Vacation. The art piece comprises of four giant light box sculptures in the shape of playing cards (2m x 1.45m x 0.6m, H x L x W). The works are made using acrylic to freeze the kings as they leap from the center of the card. Trapped in the card, the kings try desperately to escape from the frame. Eight chairs in the shapes of spades, hearts, clubs and diamonds will be placed around the card to let the public engage in this interesting and fun body of work. 

b) Memory Scape by Christo and Jeanne-Claude @ Gallery by the Harbour

The Memory Scape art exhibition at “Gallery by the Harbour” will showcase the legendary works of internationally-acclaimed “Land Art” artists Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude. The duo are widely known for their life-long commitment to public art. Their most famous and unique “Land Art” creations feature wrapped public buildings, bridges and even coastlines to create new ways of seeing familiar landscapes.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude began their collaborative art careers in Paris in the late 1950s and spent many years creating highly celebrated works of art across the globe, including Running Fence (California, 1976), Surrounded Islands (Florida, 1983), The Umbrellas (Japan, 1984 – 1991) and Wrapped Reichstag (Berlin, 1971 – 1994). Gallery by the Harbour will showcase the legendary works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude including precious hand-drawn drafts and photos, bringing you into the memory scape of the couple’s artistic life.

c) Lovely by Kim Byung-jin @ Atrium II, Gateway Arcade

Korean artist Kim Byung-jin graduated from Suwon University with a Master’s degree in Sculpture. Combining familiar worlds, his unique sculptures are a reflection of the effect of language as a cultural phenomenon in society. The word “love,” for example, which features in this set of exhibits, is the artist’s way of displaying the concept of love as it becomes a cultural and commercial trend. His colourful work for this exhibition, titled Lovely, is composed of a pair of black (H 2.5m) and white ducks (H 1.55m) as well as a red apple (H 1.4m).

d) The Bitter Sweet Life by Byun Kyung-soo @ Atrium I, Gateway Arcade

Korean artist BYUN Kyung-soo obtained a Master’s degree in sculpture from the Slade School of Art in London and the Seoul National University respectively. With the notion that people have been alienated thanks in part to communication through the internet, he created the series, The Bitter Sweet Life. Several sculptures were made of fiberglass, in similar looks but different colours. The artist wishes to express that although the distance between people may often seem very far, we can bring each other closer through communication. As his sculptures are hard to distinguish without any facial expressions, you may still recognize them by their unique gestures if taking a closer look and understanding the concept from a more profound perspective. 

Little Art Castle @ Harbour City

A little art castle and color pencil trains will be displayed at G/F, Ocean Terminal of Harbour City. Shoppers can also be the Little King & Queen taking photos with the cute soldiers. Artworks collected from “Exchange Smile” charity program will also be displayed on the castle walls and trains. Within a specified period on weekends, public can take the opportunity to exchange art through draw creatively from your imagination on cardboard and display it on the castle wall!
