PM Hun Sen Encourages Chinese Investors to Invest in Northwestern Cambodia

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has encouraged Chinese investors to seize investment opportunities in the northwestern region of Cambodia, covering four provinces: Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Pailin, which will become the Kingdom's 4th economic pole.

"This area has potential for both rice and fish, and it also has a lot of investment projects from China in the fields of hydropower, road construction, and so on,” said the Cambodian Premier at the opening ceremony of Cambodia-China Trade, Investment and Tourism Forum in Beijing, China yesterday evening.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his strong hope that this northwestern region will become a potential development area, and both Cambodian and Chinese investors can seize the opportunity to turn it into a processing area or investment area.

The other three economic poles in Cambodia are Phnom Penh capital, Preah Sihanouk coastal province, and Siem Reap cultural province.

During their meeting earlier on the same day, the Cambodian Prime Minister and Chinese President H.E. Xi Jinping agreed to explore the establishment of a “Fish and Rice Corridor” centred in northwestern Cambodia and the Tonle Sap Lake area and to develop modern ecological agriculture near the lake. They also agreed to accelerate the planning of Cambodia’s modern agricultural development, explore cooperation in digital agriculture; and support upgrading of Cambodia’s aquaculture, tropical plantation and other competitive sectors.

The Cambodia-China bilateral trade has increased significantly in the fast few years, bigger than the target set by the two governments. In 2022, the two-way trade reached US$14.5 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19 percent.
