Cambodian lawmakers approved here this morning the proposed amendment to the Law on Political Parties during the 8th plenary session of the fifth legislature of National Assembly (NA).
According to a press release of the NA General Secretariat, 65 out of 66 lawmakers present at the session chaired by Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of NA, voted for the two-article proposed amendment.
This new amendment concerns the prohibition of prisoners from the right to political participation.
Recently, the Law on Political Parties, adopted in 1997, was also amended to maintain the political stability and prevent the nation from war and national division. Under the amended law, any individual who is convicted of a crime or who is a prisoner cannot become the president and vice-president of a political party. If the leader of a political party committed a serious offence, that political party could be dissolved, and the political rights of the party's management are suspended for a certain period of time.
At the same session, the draft laws on the approval on the government's settlement for Cambodia Energy Limited and Alex Corporation were also debated and adopted.
