The Ministry of Public Works and Transport signed here this morning three contract agreements for the construction of the National Road No. 5 improvement project (Prek Kdam-Thlea Ma'am Section) under JICA loan with a total length of 135.25 kilometres.
The signing ceremony took place at the ministry under the presidency of H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works, and Transport with two contractors � Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. and World Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. joint venture for the Contract Package 1 and 2; and Hanshin Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. for the Contract Package 3.
According to the press release distributed at the signing ceremony, the National Road No. 5 Improvement Project (Prek Kdam-Poipet), under JICA ODA loan were divided into three sections.
The first section, North Section (Battambang-Serei Sophorn), with a total length of 84.74 kilometres, are being implemented into two Contract Packages. The cost of the civil work is approximately US$143.04 million under the construction period of three years. The overall progress of work accomplishment in this section is about 8.46 percent as of Jan. 5, 2018.
The second, South Section (Prek Kdam-Thlea Ma'am), with a total length of 135.25 kilometres will be implemented into three Contract Packages for the construction period of four years and will cost approximately US$246.35 million for the civil work.
The third, Middle and End Section (Thlea Ma'am-Battambang and Serei Sophorn-Poipet), is 146.04 kilometre long. The detail design of this section was completed and the invitation for bids is expected to issue in the near future.
The National Road No. 5 Improvement Project (Prek Kdam-Poipet) involves three major components, including widening of existing National Road No. 5 from two to four lanes dual carriage with the total width of 23 metres of AC surfacing and totaling about 304 kilometres; construction of five bypass roads with the total width of 23 metres of AC surfacing and totaling about 62 kilometres; and re-construction or widening of the existing bridges and construction of new bridges totaling 80 bridges.
The National Road No. 5 serves an importance rules in domestic transportation and eventually contribute to improvement of the interconnectivity of transportation sector between ASEAN and Mekong Sub-region.
