The Ministry of Justice has concluded the campaign to handle court case backlog at all municipal and provincial courts across Cambodia.

The notification was shared in the ministry's press release issued on June 29, stressing that during the one-year-and-one-month campaign, some 37,900 criminal cases have been resolved.

The number represents about 96 percent of the total 39,500 backlog cases, including some 12,600 with completed trial cases.

It continued that the capital and provincial courts have also resolved more than 62,800 new cases or 78 percent of over 80,400 new cases during the same period.

Among the 24 municipal and provincial courts in the country, 22 claimed their success in addressing the court case backlog.

The courts of Phnom Penh capital and Preah Sihanouk province, however, humbly accept some delays due to lock-down measures against the COVID-19 threat.

The Ministry of Justice launched the campaign to resolve the court case backlog on May 18 in 2020.

The campaign was intended to resolve excessive court cases, reduce overcrowded prisons, and promote the capacity and efficiency of the legal entities engaged in the court case proceedings.
