Media Exchange Promotes ASEAN-India Cooperation and Partnership

The 4th ASEAN-India Media Exchange Programme was wrapped up successfully on Wednesday, contributing to boosting the ASEAN-India Strategic Partnership through the lens of media coverages.

Supported by the India’s Ministry of External Affairs under the collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation and India Foundation, the seven-day programme kicked off on Feb. 9 and involved a total of 16 journalists and media officials from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. Under the programme, they travelled to New Delhi, Agra, and Hyderabad.

In Delhi, they had chance to talk to Indian officials who briefed them on India’s G20 presidency and the overview of India’s economy.

Furthermore, they had a meeting with the representatives at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) who shared insights on industrial sector and investment opportunities between India and ASEAN.

In Hyderabed, they attended the ASEAN-India Youth Summit before touring the Salar Jung Museum, a local collection displaying almost 50,000 art objects.

“Throughout the activities, the journalists had opportunities to discuss their areas of cooperation with ASEAN countries and lessons learned from these companies that would be relevant to the context of Southeast Asia,” the ASEAN Foundation said.

Media delegates participated in the 4th ASEAN-India Youth Summit held on Feb. 12-16 as well as visited Taj Mahal and the Ramoji Film City which was certified by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest film studio complex.

During their stay in India, they also visited the Bharat Biotech – India’s leading biotechnology company who manufactures COVAXIN, and the National Payments Cooperation of India, an umbrella organisation for operating retail payments and settlement systems in India.

The visit was part of the ASEAN-India Media Exchange Programme 2018-2024 under the purview of the ASEAN-India dialogue relations and supported by the ASEAN-India Fund.

The Programme comprises a visit of ASEAN journalists to India and a reciprocal visit of Indian journalists to ASEAN countries. In 2022, two visits were conducted in June and November respectively. ASEAN and India are bound together by their shared culture and heritage.

India’s relation with ASEAN is the core foundation of India’s Act East Policy. India has been increasingly engaged with ASEAN, and there is also growing rapidly. There have been deepening of partnership between India and ASEAN across the three pillars, namely, politico-security, economic, and socio-cultural.

The combined region of ASEAN and India represents a total population of 1.85 billion, a quarter of the global population, and with a total GDP of approximately US$5.1 trillion, the region presents one of the largest economic spaces in the world.
