The opening tilt of the GMC vs. Central Jersey Classic at Monroe High School may also be the best game of a great slate Saturday, as NJ.com No. 13 team and a GMC favorite St. Joseph (Met.) takes on arguably the Shore Conference’s favorite for the 2015 season, Freehold Township.
It’s each team’s season opener, and Freehold Township has as good a case as any team in the Shore Conference to be ranked No. 1 in the conference heading into the season after winning the Shore Conference Tournament in 2014. They also may have the most talented and cohesive team to start the season in the very deep and competitive conference. The team enters the season as one of the statewide Group IV favorites after winning that conference tournament last season and with terrific veterans such as Statewide All-Star Mark Fasano and Mike Maltese returning for their senior campaigns.
But in Middlesex County territory on Saturday, the Falcons of St. Joseph will provide a very difficult season opener for Freehold Township. St. Joseph advanced to the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship game themselves last season before losing to Monroe. Prior to that loss and the Falcons hard-fought exciting 4-3 loss to Notre Dame in the Non-Public South Jersey A Quarterfinals last season, St. Joseph compiled a 13-3-3 record, fueled in part by the talent of offensive dynamo Michael Echeverria, who is one of several key experienced senior leaders for the Falcons who return this season.
