The Ministry of Public Works and Transport said that four companies have been given in principle a green light to undertake feasibility studies on the construction project of an expressway connecting Phnom Penh capital to Siem Reap province, home of famous Angkor temples.

The study of the third expressway in Cambodia is currently underway, said H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport. 

“There are four private companies conducting feasibility studies on the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap expressway project,” he said while presiding over the launching ceremony of another vehicle technical check centre in Phnom Penh on Tuesday. 

The construction of the expressway will reduce travel time from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, contributing to attracting more tourists to the cultural province, he explained.

The third expressway project has been announced after the Kingdom put into use the first US$2 billion worth expressway, linking Phnom Penh to the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk.

The second expressway connects the capital to Bavet city, at the border to Vietnam. 

The 138-kilometre Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway is scheduled to be built in 2023 at an estimated cost of US$1.6 billion, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
