Foreign Ministry Confirms PM’s Trip to the U.S., Cuba and Japan

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN SEN, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, will lead a high-level delegation to attend the 77th United Nations General Assembly, pay an official visit to the Republic of Cuba and attend the State Funeral for H.E. ABE Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, from Sept. 21 to 28, 2022.

The Premier will be accompanied by H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, and H.E. Dr. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health, as well as other senior government officials, according to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)

Samdech Techo Prime Minister will attend the 77th Session of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) under the theme “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges” from Sept. 21 to 23 in New York.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister will deliver Cambodia’s national statement at the UNGA General Debate. The intervention will focus on Cambodia’s constructive role in supporting rule-based multilateralism, the coordinated fight against emerging global health threats, climate change, strengthening multilateral trade system, digital policies and green economy, as well as Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and efforts to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 and sustain long-term socio-economic growth.

During his stay, Samdech Techo Prime Minister will also have a series of meetings with H.E. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, H.E. Ms. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and H.E. Dr. José Manuel Ramos Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, as well as other leaders.

While accompanying Samdech Techo Prime Minister to attend the 77th UNGA, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn will attend the Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (IAMM) to be held on the sidelines of the 77th UNGA and have several meetings with Foreign Ministers of some countries and a representative of the development institution.

Official Visit to the Republic of Cuba

At the invitation of H.E. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez, Samdech Techo Prime Minister will pay an official visit to the Republic of Cuba from Sept. 23 to 25. 

During the visit, Samdech Techo Prime Minister will hold a bilateral meeting with H.E. President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez to discuss ways to further strengthen bonds of friendly relations between Cambodia and Cuba and expand areas of their cooperation. After the meeting, the two leaders will witness the signing of five important documents, namely: 1. Programme of Cooperation and Cultural Exchange, 2. MoU on Cooperation between the two Diplomatic Academies, 3. MoU on Cooperation in Sports Development, 4. Cooperation Plan between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and 5. MoU on Health Cooperation.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba. He is also expected to pay a courtesy call on His Excellency Raúl Castro, former President of Cuba. 

In Havana, Samdech Techo Prime Minister will visit the Fidel Castro Centre and the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, and lay a wreath at the José Martí Memorial. Samdech Techo Prime Minister will also meet with the Cambodian students, who are currently living and studying in the Republic of Cuba.

State Funeral for His Excellency ABE Shinzo

Samdech Techo Prime Minister will depart Havana for Tokyo to attend the State Funeral for H.E. ABE Shinzo, former Prime Minister of Japan, to be held on Sept. 27.

The late Prime Minister ABE Shinzo was a long-time good friend of Samdech Techo Prime Minister and Cambodia. During his premiership, he worked closely with the Cambodian government in enhancing the bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan, including the elevation of the bilateral cooperation to Strategic Partnership in 2013. The late Prime Minister had been widely acknowledged and praised for his active contribution to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond. 

While staying in Tokyo, Samdech Techo Prime Minister is expected to have meetings with his foreign counterparts and receive courtesy calls from Japanese dignitaries.
