Dermatologic Surgeon and Patients Release Video to Honor Lipedema Awareness Month
LOS ANGELES, June 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Dr. David Amron, renowned dermatologic surgeon and lipedema treatment expert of Beverly Hills, Calif., teamed up with his patients to create a video honoring one of the most under-recognized conditions: lipedema. With June marking Lipedema Awareness Month, Dr. Amron and his patients hope their film, “The Faces of Lipedema,” will educate the public and shed light on the disease.

Impacting more than 17 million women nationwide and 370 million worldwide, lipedema is an often-misdiagnosed fat storage condition, and its only proven treatment is tumescent lymphatic-sparing liposuction – a procedure most surgeons refuse to perform.
“It’s hard to explain if you’ve never dealt with a lifelong deformity that nobody knows is a deformity, they just think it’s fat,” said Jennifer Jones, sitting in an operation room awaiting treatment with Dr. Amron.
The video features five women of all different shapes, sizes and ethnicities who suffer from lipedema, but decided to pursue liposuction treatment. Each patient shares her journey on the hardships of living with the disease.
“It was an exciting experience because I knew now, regardless of what I’m going to go through, [I’m] going to have a change. [I’m] going to have decreased pain, I’m going to be able to move again, maybe perhaps I can wear shorts or capris,” Kathleen Manly recalls of her liposuction treatment. “After the [last] surgery was done, I remember sitting up – and this always makes me tearful, because it’s huge – and I could see my kneecaps for the first time in fifteen years.”
Dr. Amron is one of few surgeons nationwide with proven success treating lipedema, which progressively worsens with painful symptoms and often leads to complete immobility if left untreated.
“They’ve suffered with this condition for years and years and years,” Dr. Amron explains. “I absolutely feel the need to take on these patients, to earn their trust, to treat them, and to really make a change in their lives.”
