Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng received visiting Ms. Rhona Smith, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia here in Phnom Penh yesterday.
In the meeting, Ms. Rhona Smith expressed her appreciation of Cambodia's progress, especially in relation to the interventions on over-crowded prisons and drug issues.
She congratulated the Royal Government of Cambodia as well as the Ministry of Interior for remarkable achievements in upgrading voter registration and smooth local election.
In addition to highlights on other efforts by the Royal Government of Cambodia to maintain social security and order, Samdech Kralahom Sar Kheng informed the visiting rapporteur about the improvement in expansion of prison as well as drug addict rehabilitation centre.
According to the Cambodian DPM, special representatives of United Nations and Embassies are granted the privilege to visit prisoners, unless they are under investigation.
Ms. Rhona Smith arrived in Cambodia on Aug. 8 for a ten-day visit, mainly to examine the rights of children and general human rights situation in the country.
The UN special rapporteur undertakes regular visits to Cambodia and reports annually to the Human Rights Council.
Ms. Rhona Smith was appointed to cover Cambodia in March 2015. She will present her next report to the Council in September 2017.
