H.E. Keo Remy, President of Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC), has received visiting Ms. Rhona Smith, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia.
Ms. Rhona Smith underlined constructive feedback basing on her initial assessment of human rights situation in Cambodia and at the same time acknowledged some progresses made.
From his side, H.E. Keo Remy highlighted the endeavour of the Royal Government of Cambodia in enhancing democracy and human rights in the country.
Thanks to the support from development partners, added the CHRC president, the government has managed the reform of the National Election Committee as well as necessary voting registration and election procedure, thus encouraged acceptance of election results.
The two counterparts also clarified issues related to human rights situation and shared optimism for future cooperation.
Ms. Rhona Smith arrived in Cambodia yesterday for her four-day official visit, mainly to examine the rights of children and general human rights situation in the country.
The UN special rapporteur undertakes regular visits to Cambodia and reports annually to the Human Rights Council.
Ms. Rhona Smith was appointed to cover Cambodia in March 2015. She will present her next report to the Council in September 2017.
