In less than 10 years, through a series of strategic acquisitions, Belden has evolved from a supplier of copper cable products to a provider of leading signal transmission solutions. This was based on a deliberate strategy to shape and advance its product portfolio through organic and inorganic growth in order to take leadership positions in its key markets. The list of its acquisitions on its path to market leadership includes:

  • Hirschmann Automation and Control, a leading supplier of industrial Ethernet switches and routers;
  • Lumberg Automation, a niche firm with expertise in compact Ethernet packaging and connectivity;

The acquisition of Tripwire was the latest step in Belden’s product leadership strategy.”

One of Belden’s main areas of focus is industrial IT. In this market, Belden sells wired and wireless switches and routers, both hardware and software products, and has been the leader in adoption of Ethernet in the industrial market, while supporting a broad range of legacy protocols. Additionally, it emphasizes security as end users have begun to realize that industrial facilities and environments are subjected to the same degree of security threats as in the commercial space. Belden has particularly emphasized investments in wireless, security and embedded technologies as critical enablers for the Internet of Industrial Things (IoIT).

Belden’s development processes are finely tuned to support mission-critical applications and tailored to the unique needs of industrial customers, specifically maximized network uptime and ease of product installation and use. Furthermore, its product lines are compatible with those of any automation company; this has been made possible by its impressive in-house technical knowledge base and relentless focus on customer intimacy.

Belden also offers a variety of world-class networking services. The core components of its network services are on-site technical consultation that includes network planning, design, configuration and installation, as well as trouble-shooting, maintenance and assistance with future upgrades. This is supplemented by world-class, post-sales support.

Krishna Srinivasan, global president and managing partner of Frost & Sullivan, said, “Belden has done a remarkably good job of serving the full range of product needs of its target customers. Belden has optimized its product line by integrating all the key price, performance and feature points required in the industrial physical infrastructure Ethernet market.”

Belden is not just a supplier of signal transmission products, but a true strategic business partner delivering solutions that make end-user facilities perform more efficiently and profitably. Its global presence places it in close proximity to most of its customers and partners.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has developed a comprehensive product line that caters to the breadth of the market it serves. Premera Blue Cross Announces Cyberattack, Offers Protection For Affected Individuals

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash., March, 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Premera Blue Cross (“Premera”) announced the organization has been the target of a cyberattack.

On January 29, 2015, Premera discovered that cyberattackers had executed a sophisticated attack to gain unauthorized access to its Information Technology (IT) systems.  Premera’s investigation further revealed that the initial attack occurred on May 5, 2014. As part of its investigation, Premera notified the FBI and is coordinating with the Bureau’s investigation into this attack.  Premera also worked closely with Mandiant, one of the world’s leading cybersecurity firms, to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the incident and to remove the infection created by the attack.

“The security of Premera’s members’ personal information remains a top priority. We at Premera take this issue seriously and sincerely regret the concern it may cause,” said Jeff Roe, Chief Executive Officer, Premera. “As much as possible, we want to make this event our burden, not that of the affected individuals, by making services available today to help protect people’s information.”

This incident affected Premera Blue Cross, Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, and its affiliate brands Vivacity and Connexion Insurance Solutions, Inc. Premera’s investigation determined that the attackers may have gained unauthorized access to members’ information, which could include members’ name, date of birth, Social Security number, mailing address, email address, telephone number, member identification number, bank account information, and claims information, including clinical information. Individuals who do business with Premera and provided the company with their email address, personal bank account number, or Social Security number are also affected.

The investigation has not determined that any such data was removed from Premera’s systems.  Premera also has no evidence to date that such data has been used inappropriately.

Premera is beginning to mail letters to approximately 11 million affected individuals today and is providing two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those individuals.  Premera also has established a dedicated call center for its members and other affected individuals. More information can be found at: www.premeraupdate.com. The information involved in this incident dates back to 2002 and individuals who believe they are affected by this cyberattack but who have not received a letter by April 20, 2015, are encouraged to call the number listed at that website.

Along with steps taken to cleanse its IT system of issues raised by this cyberattack, Premera is taking additional actions to strengthen and enhance the security of its IT systems moving forward.

Increased Amount of Data from Multiple Devices Boosts Mobile Advertising in Latin America, Finds Frost & Sullivan

– Value chain participants in mobile advertising need to guard against ‘over targeting’

SAO PAULO, March 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The proliferation of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices has created a catch-22 situation for mobile advertisers. While on the one hand, the customer pool has expanded vastly, the diversity of platforms and operating systems challenges advertisers to attract a true audience. Ineffective technologies for cross-device digital advertising can result in brands overspending and still not achieving the desired results.

The application-to-peer (A2P) SMS advertising segment is expected to earn revenues of $19.8 billion in 2014, and reach $95.4 billion in 2019, according to the new study from Frost & Sullivan, Brazilian Mobile Advertising Services Market (https://www.frost.com/q293417824).

If you are interested in more information on this study, please send an e-mail to Francesca Valente, Corporate Communications, at francesca.valente@frost.com.

Although user attributes such as cookies and user IDs are available to advertisers, it may be counterproductive to use the data for ad targeting in mobile devices. Therefore, advertisers prefer to use non-personally identifiable information (NPII). Many companies offer opt-in and opt-out options for receiving ads through an SMS so that they do not infringe on user privacy.

The opt-in feature has given a huge thrust to the Brazilian SMS ecosystem. However, even though SMS represents 9.2 percent of mobile carrier revenue in Brazil, it will eventually make way for IM applications such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

“Owing to the rising popularity of mobile social media, mobile enterprise value-added-services such as A2P and SMS are being increasingly improved to enhance revenue and customer experience,” said Frost & Sullivan ICT Industry Analyst Maiara Paula Munhoz.

Latin American brands are turning to mobile advertising not only because it reaches consumers on the go but also because it fulfils different requirements for different verticals.

National- or regional-level companies have a huge advantage over smaller companies in terms of resources for capturing, managing, analyzing and acting on Big Data. However, mobile advertising can help level the playing field, as even the smallest company can fill up as much space on a smartphone screen as a large company.

“To illustrate the potential of mobile advertising in Brazil, five out of ten countries most involved with social networks are Latin American,” noted Munhoz. “Furthermore, Brazil is one of the top three countries with the most Facebook users in the world. This represents a huge market opportunity for companies investing in mobile social network advertising in the country.”

Network Access Control Emerges as Foundational Network Security Defense Solution

— Ability to provide endpoint visibility and integrate with other cyber defense tools gives NAC platforms global prominence, finds Frost & Sullivan

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Feb. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Network access control (NAC) has evolved into a foundational network security defense solution. Vendors across the globe can be lauded for improving the fundamentals of the traditional aspects of NAC platforms, by which it is now easier to register and place devices onboard networks, as well as, integrate directories onto Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) servers.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Network Access Control (NAC) Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $552.8 million in 2014 and expects this to more than double to $1.46 billion by 2018. While NAC systems have been designed to secure assets in the financial, healthcare and government sectors, businesses across all sectors can benefit from these solutions.

For complimentary access to more information on this research, please visit: http://bit.ly/1AkKKSH

NAC deployments are increasing as mid-sized and enterprise networks are expanding to allow more devices per employee and support the bring-your-own-device trend. While virtual appliances have been gaining traction in the enterprise space, NAC security-as-a-service offerings are capturing the interest of companies in the small- to medium-sized business segment.

“Beyond greenfield opportunities, organic growth is occurring as IT directors across the globe dismiss first-generation NAC issues and realize the advantages and capabilities of next-generation systems,” said Frost & Sullivan Network Security Industry Analyst Christopher Kissel. “At the time of contract renewals, IT directors are increasingly looking to upgrade, as well as boost requirements and implementation coverage of prior installations.”

Encouraged by these trends, NAC platforms are being integrated with other network defense tools. Many of the leading NAC providers already have mechanisms which allow the network and endpoint security information to be sent to other networks, applications and security platforms. As part of the overall mechanism, these NAC systems can also receive data from other platforms.

“Such developments have enhanced the context and resulting control of both NAC and other systems,” noted Kissel. “Thus, NAC will be able to further reduce the available attack surface that can be intruded.”

However, the trend of integrating NAC with other network security platforms is a double-edged sword as the operational siloes between technologies are becoming less apparent. Moreover, companies that are currently NAC integration partners could become competitors, offering different types of endpoint visibility and posture assessment products through licensing plans.

Nevertheless, NAC vendors must continue to engage in integration activity and enter partnerships with other security platform providers, cloud application providers, and players operating in virtual environments. They must also focus on ease of deployment, scalability, and pricing to differentiate from the competition.

Analysis of the Global Network Access Control (NAC) Market is part of the Network Security Technologies (http://www.networksecurity.frost.com) Growth Partnership Service program. How Game Changing Australian Technology FunCaptcha is Connected to The Imitation Game

New technology significantly improves usability of “reverse Turing test” to prove that Internet users are human (CAPTCHA)

BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — With the release of the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game in Australia on January 1st, computational security just got sexy. And the computational security experts at FunCaptcha think it’s about time.

Kevin Gosschalk (l) and Matthew Ford, creators of FunCaptcha and huge fans of Alan Turing.

Kevin Gosschalk (l) and Matthew Ford, creators of FunCaptcha and huge fans of Alan Turing.

The film stars Keira Knightly and Benedict Cumberbatch, with Cumberbatch as the legendary Alan Turing, who many regard as being the father of modern computing and artificial intelligence. The film explores his tumultuous boarding school years, his controversial post-WW2 life but most importantly – his time during WW2 when he covertly lead a ragtag group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers in breaking the code generated from the infamous Nazi utilized “Enigma” machines. In so doing, Turing and his team effectively ended the war in favor of the Allies, saving countless lives and breaking the back of Hitler’s regime.

The link between FunCaptcha and Turing comes in the form of CAPTCHAs – the much-hated obscure letters and numbers that must be typed out to separate spammers and their “bot” programs from legitimate users. CAPTCHA is an acronym that stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart” and they’ve historically been used to defend websites and online services from hackers and spam by distinguishing genuine human users from malicious bots. But it comes at a cost. This cost, something which FunCaptcha aims to solve, is that the traditional CAPTCHAs are frustrating and difficult to complete, driving away up to 25 percent of potential users.

SwipeAds COO and Founder, Matthew Ford, a former game designer with Atari and Microsoft and Turing expert, said these tests to stop automated systems from accessing registration and comment forms were essential to stop cyber-fraud and help maintain the integrity of on-line transactions, but are extremely frustrating for users.

“Studies show one in four attempts failing a standard CAPTCHA. With more than 300 million tests served up every day, that’s a lot of frustrated people. In trying to stop spam and other kinds of online fraud, our industry kills user conversion. We saw an opportunity to make the Internet even more secure while making the CAPTCHA test easier for genuine human users.”

FunCaptcha uses gamified technology that is easy for humans but impractical for bots and automated systems to complete. FunCaptcha CEO and Founder Kevin Gosschalk said the company’s solution is proving to be of value to users and the sites that install it.

“We are serving up more than 30 million FunCaptchas a month with a conversion rate that is more than 20 percent higher than standard tests, which means more online users are doing business with our customers.”

Ford sees a creative connection between Alan Turing and FunCaptcha. “Turing put the T into FunCaptcha, and that’s so fitting. Alan Turing had a vast imagination about what computers would eventually become, and his vision is still ahead of our time. I think he’d believe as we do, that the urgent need to distinguish people from machine imitations will remain for centuries, and requires constant innovation.”

The Imitation Game opened widely in Australia on January 1st.

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency,‘ an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, The Imitation Game follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.

Produced by The Weinstein Company, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley and with a score composed by Alexandre Desplat, The Imitation Game releases in the U.S. on November 21st.

About FunCaptcha

FunCaptcha is a new form of the human verification test known as CAPTCHA, the acronym for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” CAPTCHAs are those much-hated obscure letters and numbers you must type out to prove you’re a human when signing up to a new website. Over 300 million CAPTCHAs are solved each day – taking over a million hours to execute. FunCaptcha replaces those with a small gamified visual puzzle which takes 5-7 seconds to solve and not only stops the bots, but also greatly improves user conversions by 20.4 percent from the old typed-in kind of CAPTCHA. FunCaptcha is free to install and use, can be customized to match a site’s theme, and can even generate revenue for websites by showing optional ads.

Protecting Your Business from a DDoS Attack

— Increase in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks has driven the need to mitigate risk, finds Frost & Sullivan

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are growing in scale and sophistication, becoming a top tool for hackers. As these attacks are difficult to stop without purpose-built platforms, DDoS mitigation solutions are rapidly gaining traction among businesses of all sizes. Government and industry regulations that mandate proactive investments in DDoS mitigation will further propel market development.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Mitigation Market, finds that the market earned revenue of $354.0 million in 2013 and is estimated to reach $929.5 million by 2018. The study covers physical network appliances, as well as subscriptions to cloud-based scrubbing services.

The evolving nature of DDoS attacks is a double-edged sword that generates demand for DDoS mitigation services, while challenging vendors to create complete, effective and affordable products. Vendors must invest in research and development to update their solutions and provide consistent value to help customers manage risks.

“With the importance of internet access and web services in businesses increasing, high volume network-based attacks, combined with application-layer attacks, represent an effective threat against any online business,” said Frost & Sullivan Network Security Senior Industry Analyst Chris Rodriguez. “This escalation in application-layer attacks will require solution providers to offer hybrid platforms combining high-performance on-premise and high capacity cloud-based systems.”

Collaborations among vendors with complementary products will enable both partners to deliver comprehensive and seamless DDoS protection. In addition, mergers and acquisitions are strategies vendors will likely employ to complete their portfolios.

“Solution providers should also look for avenues to make DDoS mitigation accessible in terms of both price-performance and usability,” advised Rodriguez. “For instance, creating open standards for technologies such as cloud-signaling will improve interoperability and reduce development costs, in turn enhancing profitability in the global market.”
