Cambodia’s SCO Observer Application Discussed

Cambodia’s SCO observer application after becoming Dialogue Partner of this organisation in 2015 has been discussed.

The discussion took place between Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and visiting Secretary-General of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) H.E. Zhang Ming, in their meeting here this afternoon, on the sidelines of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

According to a press release of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in the courtesy meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked H.E. Zhang Ming for his coordination in favour of Cambodian bid to become an Observer of the SCO and underlined the country’s readiness to comply with the Organisation’s recommendations and to endeavour to reach this goal.

Since becoming SCO’s Dialogue Partner in 2015, Cambodia has contributed in promoting the cooperation between ASEAN-SCO, said Samdech Techo Prime Minister, underlining Cambodia’s active engagement in different regional and international organisations with an aim at strengthening the friendship and maintaining peace, stability and security.

While congratulating the government and people of Cambodia for the great changes over the last 10 years following his first visit, Secretary-General Zhang Ming thanked Samdech Techo Prime Minister for the invitation extended to him to attend the Related Summits and highly appreciated Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship. 

He praised Cambodia for its active engagement in promoting ASEAN-SCO relations and highlighted the SCO’s internal process for a country to be elevated from Dialogue Partner status to Observer of SCO and expressed his hope that Cambodia will become SCO Observer.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister and the Secretary-General discussed and shared the commitment to further strengthening the cooperation between ASEAN and SCO.
