Cambodians Residing Overseas Allowed to Join the Country’s Election

Cambodia has granted voting eligibility to three generations of Cambodians who were forced to flee the country by civil war since 1970s.

The news was shared by H.E. Suos Yara, Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Propaganda and Information during a recent consultative meeting with diplomats from embassies in Cambodia.

The granted voting eligibility has been proposed by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen after hearing the difficulty and willingness to join Cambodia's elections by overseas Cambodians during his U.S. trip early last month, added H.E. Suos Yara.

This is a historic offer reaffirming Cambodia's commitment to multi-party democracy, he emphasised.

In the past, Cambodians with foreign nationality were only allowed to apply for a long-term visas for life.

Now, any of them regardless of their political affiliation, can apply for Cambodian identity card or citizenship, he said, adding that if they want to join Cambodian elections, they can get registered and go to vote at Cambodian embassy at their respective resident countries or come to cast the vote in Cambodia.

According to Mr. Dim Sovannarom, a news team leader of the National Election Committee, all Cambodian eligible to vote can get themselves registered starting October this year so that they can join Cambodia’s general election next year.
