Cambodian, Japanese Leaders Exchange Official Letters on 70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

The Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Japan have recently exchanged official letters to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between both nations.

In their messages, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and his Japanese counterpart H.E. KISHIDA Fumio have extended their best wishes and warmest congratulations to each other, the two governments and peoples on the auspicious occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and Japan.

“I am sincerely delighted that our bilateral relations have reached a new milestone, as evidenced by the recent elevation from a strategic partnership to a ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen said.

Over the past 70 years, Cambodia and Japan have maintained excellent relations and productive cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks, despite great uncertainties and major challenges faced by our region and the world recently, he added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the Royal Government and people of Cambodia have always highly valued Japan's crucial contribution and continual support to Cambodia's peacebuilding and socio-economic development. “It is my fervent hope that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between both countries will yield even greater benefits to our peoples and our nations,” he said.

“Building on progress that we have made together in the past decades, and as we chart the future together, I am very optimistic and confident that in the next 45 years, our relations will grow even stronger, and the people of our two regions will get closer as one family,” he underlined.

For his part, H.E. KISHIDA Fumio wrote that he is pleased to promote the bilateral relationship to the level of 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' that he announced with Samdech Techo last November.

The Japanese Premier added that the two countries have established and maintained a warm friendship for the past 70 years. In particular, through cooperation for peace, reconstruction and development of Cambodia, the two countries and peoples have built an invaluable trusting relationship with the remarkable development of Cambodia.

The potential for cooperation between both nations is even greater, especially the demining assistance to Ukraine presents a new form of their cooperation. Under the 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership', Japan intends to establish new cooperation with Samdech Techo Hun Sen and the Cambodian people.

"I look forward to the people of both countries participating in the 70th anniversary of Japan-Cambodia friendship, which will be held throughout the year," he said.

On the occasion, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan also exchanged their congratulations.

Cambodia and Japan established their diplomatic relations in 1953. Now, Japan is an important strategic and development partner of Cambodia. Japan has wholeheartedly helped Cambodia build bridges to peace, prosperity and connect the Kingdom to the region and the world.
