Cambodian Foreign Minister Chairs the Informal ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Meeting

Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation chaired the annual Informal ASEAN Foreign Minister’s Meeting (IAMM), held in New York City, U.S.A.

on Sept. 22, on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Meeting exchanged views on the candidatures of ASEAN Member States to the United Nations bodies and International Organisations, and agreed that continued promotion of ASEAN candidature would further raise ASEAN international profile and relevance, read the ministry’s press release.

Taking this opportunity, Cambodia sought the support of fellow ASEAN Member States for Cambodia’s membership in the Organisational Committee of the Peace building Commission (OCPBC) for the term 2025-2026 and in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2028-2030.

On ASEAN external relations, the Meeting welcomed the recent accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), which now has 49 parties, after six more countries signed on to it in August this year and agreed to accept the accession of Spain and Ukraine.

With regard to the preparation of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Phnom Penh, on Nov. 10-13, 2022, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister briefed the Meeting on the preparation and the tentative programme, and expressed high appreciation for the full support of all ASEAN Member States to ensure substantive outcomes of the Summits, as well as the 2nd ASEAN Global Dialogue on Post-Covid-19 Comprehensive Recovery, which is a major side event.

Apart from ASEAN Community building efforts, the Meeting also exchanged views on the situation in Myanmar and the follow-up on the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) agreed at the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on April 24, 2021.

H.E. Deputy Prime Minister, along with other ASEAN Foreign Ministers, reiterated the importance of accelerating progress on the implementation of the 5PC, at this critical juncture of heightened geopolitical tension.
