Cambodian Foreign Minister Attends Inauguration Ceremony of ASEAN Secretariat’s New Building

Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia departed here this morning for Jakarta, Indonesia to join with other Foreign Ministers and representatives of the ASEAN Member States in inaugurating new building of the ASEAN Secretariat to be held on Aug. 8.

"This inauguration ceremony is presided over by H.E. Mr. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in a recent press release.

His attendance is made at the invitation of H.E. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

According to the press release, the inauguration ceremony marks the 52nd anniversary of the founding of ASEAN. A placement of Time Capsule that contains the ASEAN Leaders' respective messages of hopes and expectations for ASEAN on its 75th anniversary in the year 2042 will be conducted.

The inauguration of the ASEAN Secretariat's new premises demonstrates the increasing responsibility of the ASEAN Secretariat and its leadership to meet the evolving global and regional challenges and to build the ASEAN community, namely Political-Security Community, Economic Community, and Socio-Cultural Community, it underlined.

Located in South Jakarta, next to the current building, the new building, whose construction was completed early this year at a cost of US$37.3 million, has two 16-floor towers.

Since its establishment in February 1976, the ASEAN Secretariat had operated out of Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, then the ASEAN Secretariat moved into its current premises in 1981. It was officially inaugurated by Indonesia's former President Suharto on May 9, 1981.
