Some 1.99 million old-aged people would be recorded in Cambodia by 2030, while the total population would increase to about 18.1 million, according to a forecast of the Ministry of Planning.
The growth rate of elderly people is projected to be 80.1 percent whereas that of the total population 18.2 percent between 2015 and 2030, it added.
In 2015, out of the total population of 15.3 millions, there were 1.11 million elderly people, it pointed out.
The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has paid attention to this demographic issue. We have set up centres for care of old-aged people We have also put together national policy for elderly people for 2017-2030. It was further efforts to raise high quality of life of the ageing population, to guarantee elderly people's wellbeing, and to ensure Cambodian society an inclusive one, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen underlined last month.
Though we have thought out policies and our mechanisms have successfully implemented, there are still challenges and shortcomings in the process of social affairs development. I think it is the most appropriate time for us, with the socio-economic progresses we have made, to start figuring our strategy to give care for our people's wellbeing. It is the backbone to every aspect and sector in our society. Should we realise successes in resolving these issues, they will reflect clarity and prosperity of our nation, and will ensure national dignity, supremacy, and potential in elevating national development and in achieving further successes, he said.
The National Ageing Policy 2017-2030, launched in January this year, identifies nine priorities related to the senior citizens, including financial security, health and well-being, lifestyle, favourable environment, active ageing and associations of elderly people, inter-generation relations, abuse, indifference and violence, emergency situation, and ageing readiness.
The RGC has been also establishing Older People's Associations at the 1,646 communes/Sangkat across the country.
