Cambodia, UN Satisfied with Bilateral Cooperation

Cambodia and the United Nations have shown their satisfaction with their existing good cooperation and exchanged views on its further enhancement, according to H.E. Chum Sounry, Spokesperson of the Ministry of of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC).

In their meeting here on Nov. 2, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of MFAIC and newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator to Cambodia Mr. Joseph Scheuer looked forwards to the resumption of the annual dialogue between the Royal Government of Cambodia and all UN agencies in Cambodia that was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn extended a warm welcome to Mr. Joseph Scheuer while the latter expressed his good feeling like back to home” referring to his previous services in different UN agencies in Cambodia.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn highly appreciated the valuable contribution by the UN Team through the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and during the pandemic outbreak, particularly the provision of COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX facility and other medical equipment. With this generous assistance together with the Government’s vaccination strategy, he said, Cambodia has achieved a high rate of vaccinated population with more than 95 percent.

The Deputy PM recalled the recent fruitful meeting between Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen and UN Secretary General H.E. Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The new UN Resident Coordinator expressed his thanks for the support and arrangement for the upcoming visit by the Secretary General to attend the ASEAN Summits and Related Summits. Both the Deputy PM and UN Resident Coordinator underlined the importance of another meeting between Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen and the UN Secretary General on the margins of the Summits.

H.E. Prak Sokhonn touched on Cambodia’s active contribution to the United Nations Peace-Keeping Operations (UNPKOS), underlining Cambodia’s determination to continue to send its blue berets for the sake of peace.

Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn highlighted the main outcomes achieved by the 55th AMM and Related Meetings hosted by Cambodia despite the challenges and hot regional and international issues. He also briefed his guest on the preparation by the Kingdom for the incoming ASEAN Summits and Related Summits. Mr. Joseph Scheuer wished Cambodia success in hosting these Summits.
