The Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports will hold a ceremony to celebrate the the National and World Environment Day 2018 on June 5, said the ministry in an announcement released yesterday.
Themed Together to eliminate Plastic Pollution, the upcoming celebration will take place at Hun Sen Bun Rany Psar Demtkov High School in Phnom Penh, from 7:30 am to 11:00 am.
The annual event is aimed to raise public awareness on the impacts of plastic pollution on health and environment and thus to encourage their participation in reducing plastic pollution for the environmental protection in Cambodia, it stressed.
World Environment Day is the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
Above all, World Environment Day is the people's day for doing something to take care of the Earth. That something can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be a solo action or involve a crowd. Everyone is free to choose.
Cambodia, especially the Ministry of Environment, has been paying attention to the campaign against plastic. In October last year, the royal government issued a sub-decree on plastic usage management in order to increase the effectiveness in reducing the import, production, distribution and usage of plastic bags.
This 32-article sub-decree is also aimed to promote the public participation in reducing the use of plastic bags and encourage the private sector to either recycle plastic bags or produce those made of biodegradable materials.
Under this sub-decree, plastic bag use will be extra charged at the supermarket as part of the government's measures to reduce waste and protect the environment.
Then, numerous events and campaigns have been held to further promote the understanding on plastic pollution.
Annually, about 10 million plastic bags are used by the Cambodian people. Each Cambodian, especially those living in the urban areas, uses at least five plastic bags a day.
