Cambodia Needs over 10,000 Guides by 2020

In response to the growing number of foreign visitors year in year out, Cambodia needs more than 10,000 guides by 2020.

Addressing at the Opening Ceremony of National Tour-Guide Training Course in Siem Reap province on April 17, Minister of Tourism H.E. Thong Khon said that the ministry has been giving priority to the training of tour guides in response to the increasing number of foreign tourists to the Kingdom, mainly the Chinese.

Last year, Cambodia attracted 5.6 million international visitors, up 11.8%, generating about US$3,638 million national income and creating direct jobs for over 620,000 people, of them more than 5,000 are tour guides.

According to H.E. Thong Khon, the country expects to welcome about 7 million foreign tourists by 2020, generating around US$5 billion as national revenue and creating some 1 million direct jobs.

In June 2016, Cambodia launched the White Paper on China Ready for Cambodia Tourism aiming to attract two million Chinese visitors a year by 2020. Some 1.2 million Chinese tourists visited to Cambodia in 2017.
