The Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders commemorated today the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22) to raise the public's awareness on the value of biodiversityand ecosystems.
The commemoration was hosted by Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Environment.
Cambodia celebrates this event annually since 2010 through various forms of activities to mainstream awareness on biodiversity and ecosystems to people of all milieus.
The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, December 29 (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated the International Day for Biological Diversity.
Then in December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on May 22, 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
