Germany has agreed to boost the cooperation on garment sector with Cambodia, particularly promoting imports of the products into the European Union.
The commitment was shared after a recent meeting between Minister of Labour and Vocational Training H.E. Ith Samheng and H.E. Ingo Karsten, Ambassador of Germany to Cambodia at the ministry office here in Phnom Penh.
In a media interview after the meeting, H.E. Ith Samheng expressed his appreciation of the cooperation, underlining that the Royal Government of Cambodia considers garment as a priority sector at least for the next ten years.
The sector, he said, has created jobs and income for the country, and more importantly buyers are happy with products from Cambodia.
The minister added that German development partner GIZ has been working with Cambodia to improve working condition and build workers' capacity in order to ensure quality import to the European Union as well as Germany.
In the union, Germany is one of the biggest buyers of garment products from Cambodia with trading value of approximately US$1 billion.
