Cambodia Achieved 2021 Preparation to Graduate from LDCs

According to the United Nations (UN) assessment, Cambodia in 2021 prepared well to graduate from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) status.

The update was shared in a workshop on Cambodia's Sustainable Exit from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) via Zoom on Jan. 17.

H.E. Chhay Than, Senior Minister and Minister of Planning and Ms. Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator, co-chaired the virtual meeting.

H.E. Chhay Than underlined that the workshop was helpful for the ministry and other concerned government bodies to further prepare for Cambodia's exit from the LDCs status with a smooth transition strategy.

Cambodia has completed first-round prerequisites for the exit from LDCs in 2021 as well as the exit preparation in the context of social-economic and environmental development, and Doha Programme of Action 2022-2031 (DPoA 2022-2031).

The prerequisites achieved included the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of US$1,377, (higher than the set US$1,222), Human Assets Index (HAI) of 74.3 (higher than the set 66), and Economic and Environment Vulnerable Index of 30.6 (slightly lower than the set 32).

This reflects the Royal Government of Cambodia's effort in restoring and developing the country well recognised by the international communities, he added.

The process of LDCs exit required Cambodia to sustain the performance until 2024 including any examination of vulnerability profiles and ex-ante impact assessment.

Once done, Cambodia will graduate from LDCs status, and then the official exit will take effect in the next three years, 2027.
